Bird-Safe Home: PTFE, Smoke, Aerosols and Kitchen Hazards

Many household products that are tolerable to people and other pets can be dangerous to birds. Their highly efficient respiratory system makes air quality a central part of bird safety, not simply a comfort issue.

PTFE and overheated non-stick products
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) can be present in non-stick cookware, drip pans, appliances, irons and heating products. When overheated, PTFE can release fumes that are acutely toxic to birds.
Do not house a bird in the kitchen
The kitchen combines fumes, hot cookware, open water, sharp objects and food hazards. Even a cage several feet from the stove can still be exposed to airborne contaminants.
Smoke is harmful
Cigarette, cannabis, cooking, fireplace and engine smoke can all irritate or injure the avian respiratory tract. Smoke exposure should be prevented rather than managed by opening a window after the fact.
Aerosols and fragrances
Air fresheners, spray cleaners, hairspray, perfume, paint fumes and some scented products can create airborne exposure. Use bird-safe cleaning practices and move birds completely away from renovation fumes.
Self-cleaning ovens and overheated appliances
High-temperature cycles and overheated coatings are particular concerns. The VCA household-hazard guide recommends keeping birds away from kitchens and other sources of fumes.
Electrical cords
Parrots chew. Unprotected electrical cables can cause severe burns and internal injury. Use physical barriers rather than assuming the bird will ignore cords.
Open water and hot surfaces
Toilets, sinks, bathtubs, pots and uncovered aquariums can be drowning or burn hazards during out-of-cage time.
Other pets
Cats and dogs can injure birds even during apparently playful interaction. Supervise carefully and use physical separation rather than relying on temperament alone.
If you suspect fume exposure
Move the bird to fresh air away from the source and contact an avian veterinarian immediately. Rapid or labored breathing, weakness, poor balance or collapse is an emergency.

Cleaning products need a bird-safe plan
Remove the bird from the area before using strong cleaners, and ventilate thoroughly according to product instructions. “Natural” scents and essential oils are not automatically respiratory-safe for birds.
Renovation can create prolonged exposure
Paint, adhesives, flooring materials, sealants and construction dust may remain in the air long after workers leave. Moving a bird to a separate safe location can be more reliable than simply covering the cage.
Carbon monoxide is dangerous to every household member
Maintain working carbon-monoxide alarms and fuel-burning appliances. A bird’s sensitivity to air contaminants is not a substitute for proper household detection and ventilation.
Plants and foods can create a second layer of risk
Birds explore with the beak. Keep toxic houseplants, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, avocado and heavily salted foods inaccessible during out-of-cage time.
Windows and mirrors
Unfamiliar glass surfaces can cause collision injuries. Use curtains, decals, screening or gradual room introduction so a flying bird can learn the boundaries.
Emergency transport after exposure
Use a secure carrier with good airflow and keep the bird warm without overheating. Call the avian clinic while traveling so staff know a respiratory emergency is arriving.
Audit the home when you buy a new appliance
Air fryers, space heaters, hair tools, ovens and specialty cooking devices may contain non-stick coatings or emit fumes when first heated. Check the manufacturer’s materials and bird-safety implications before use in the same air space.
