Dog Hiking Readiness Checker

This readiness checker helps you decide whether today’s plan looks reasonable, should be shortened, or should be deferred. It cannot medically clear a dog for exercise.

The AKC hiking guidance highlights conditioning, water, trail etiquette and post-hike checks. PetsFilled’s Dogs for Hiking guide covers the same decision in greater depth.

Use the individual dog, not the breed label

A dog from an athletic breed can still be unconditioned, sore, overheated or too young for a hard route. The tool treats current fitness, weather, paws, water and control as more important than reputation.

When a shorter route is the right result

Turning around early or choosing an easier trail is a successful safety decision. Build conditioning gradually and judge recovery later that day and the next morning before increasing difficulty.
