Small Dog Names: Cute, Tiny, Funny and Big-Personality Ideas

A small dog does not need a “tiny” name, but size can be a fun starting point. Some owners lean into the contrast with names like Titan or Moose; others prefer names that match a compact body, quick movement or cheerful personality.

Choose a practical call name

The AKC’s current dog-naming guidance recommends names that are easy to say and distinct from common cues. Try each shortlist name in real sentences before choosing it.

  • “Pip, come.”
  • “Mochi, leave it.”
  • “Atlas, let’s go.”

A name that sounds charming on paper can be awkward if it resembles “sit,” “stay,” “no” or another pet’s name.

Do not force personality from size

Small dogs can be calm, bold, cautious, athletic or independent. The name can be playful, but the dog’s behavior should be assessed as an individual rather than assumed from body size.

Names for extra-tiny dogs

Dot, Pip, Bitty, Nib, Bean, Pebble, Pixel, Mini, Button, Sprout, Titch and Nano can highlight tiny size without making the dog sound fragile.

Big names for little dogs

Titan, Moose, Bear, Atlas, Tank, Goliath, Hulk, Mammoth, Brutus, Boss, Duke and Thor create a funny size contrast that often works well for confident small dogs.

Names for white small dogs

Snow, Pearl, Cotton, Mochi, Cloud, Ivory, Frost, Cream, Vanilla, Marshmallow, Dove and Moon can fit pale coats while remaining easy to call.

Names for black small dogs

Onyx, Jet, Raven, Shadow, Pepper, Ink, Coal, Soot, Midnight, Licorice, Storm and Eclipse can match dark coats without implying anything about temperament.

Names for brown or tan dogs

Toffee, Maple, Biscuit, Hazel, Copper, Mocha, Cocoa, Peanut, Truffle, Caramel, Honey and Churro suit warm coat colors.

Names for gray or silver dogs

Silver, Slate, Ash, Mist, Storm, Pewter, Smoke, Dove, Cloud, Graphite, Steel and Luna can fit gray coats or simply a cool-toned theme.

Names for lively dogs

Dash, Zip, Rocket, Turbo, Flash, Zippy, Scout, Roxy, Jax, Pepper, Sparky and Ziggy fit dogs that move through the world with obvious energy.

Names for calm small dogs

Willow, Pearl, Olive, Remy, Teddy, Mabel, Dove, Milo, Belle, Theo, Clover and Lou suit a quieter style without forcing the dog into a personality category.

Old-fashioned names

Mabel, Arthur, Elsie, Percy, Edith, Nell, Walter, Clara, George, Millie, Alfie and Florence tend to age well and work for many small companion breeds.

Modern short names

Kai, Zuri, Nova, Nala, Nico, Jax, Remy, Rue, Zara, Enzo, Milo and Lex are compact, distinctive and easy to use during training.

Food names

Mochi, Waffle, Cookie, Biscuit, Olive, Bean, Peanut, Truffle, Cocoa, Maple, Noodle and Pickle are playful choices that remain easy to say.

Pair names for two small dogs

Pip & Poppy, Bean & Biscuit, Milo & Mia, Coco & Finn, Teddy & Pearl, Olive & Pepper, Dot & Dash, or Max & Belle are memorable pairs. Avoid names that rhyme too closely.

Names based on ears, coat or markings

Patch, Freckles, Dotty, Socks, Tux, Blaze, Spot, Fluff, Silky, Fringe, Curly and Velvet can fit visible features without requiring a specific breed.

Do not choose a fragile-sounding name because the dog is small

Small dogs still need confidence-building, training and normal movement. A name like Baby or Tiny is fine if you enjoy it, but the dog should still be treated as a capable animal rather than a decorative object.

Test the name outdoors

A name that sounds clear in the kitchen can disappear in traffic noise or a busy park. Call each finalist at normal volume and notice which one is easiest to distinguish.

Check cue overlap

Very short names can resemble common training words. Say the name beside “sit,” “stay,” “down,” “no” and “come” before deciding.

Think about the adult dog

A puppy may weigh two kilograms today but live with the name for fifteen years. Choose something you will still enjoy when the dog is mature and senior.

Changing a rescue dog’s name

Dogs can learn a new call name quickly when it predicts food, play and attention. You can also keep the old name if it is familiar and practical.

Keep identification separate from style

A cute call name does not replace microchip registration, collar tags or accurate veterinary records. Keep all ownership information current regardless of what nickname the dog uses at home.

Names for toy breeds

Pip, Mimi, Coco, Lou, Teddy, Poppy, Nico, Belle, Milo, Pearl, Finn and Rosie work well for Chihuahuas, Yorkies, Maltese, Toy Poodles and other very small companion dogs without being locked to one breed.

Names for small terriers

Scout, Pepper, Dash, Jett, Rebel, Ziggy, Rocket, Ace, Roxy, Finn, Patch and Sparky can fit active terrier personalities while still sounding clear in training.

Names for fluffy small dogs

Cloud, Teddy, Puff, Cotton, Mochi, Marshmallow, Fluff, Snowy, Velvet, Pompom, Biscuit and Pearl can nod to coat texture without implying the dog is delicate.

Names for smooth-coated small dogs

Jet, Dash, Coco, Bean, Olive, Pip, Rex, Mia, Nico, Dot, Leo and Remy are compact, easy to call and suit sleek little dogs especially well.

Names for senior small dogs

Mabel, Walter, Nell, Arthur, Pearl, George, Millie, Clara, Percy, Edith, Gus and Rose can feel warm and dignified for older adopted dogs while remaining easy everyday call names.

Names for rescue dogs with an unknown background

Scout, Hope, Sunny, Clover, Remy, Milo, Poppy, Finn, Olive, Teddy, Belle and Lucky can work without assuming breed, history or personality from appearance alone.

Names children can pronounce easily

Max, Mia, Coco, Leo, Pip, Teddy, Poppy, Bean, Rosie, Lou, Finn and Belle are simple enough for young family members to say consistently.

Names that travel well

If you expect to use boarding, hotels, daycare or international travel, choose something easy to spell and hear over the phone. A simple call name reduces mistakes in busy environments.

Do not choose only from appearance

Coat and size can inspire ideas, but personality often gives the better final choice. Wait a few days if the dog is new and let behavior influence the shortlist.

Names for dogs with a big personality

Boss, Rocket, Scout, Rebel, Pepper, Ace, Jett, Roxy, Dash, Turbo, Queenie and Duke can fit a small dog that confidently takes up space in the household. The name can celebrate attitude without turning normal behavior into a stereotype.

Keep the call name distinct

If another pet or family member has a similar-sounding name, choose something with a different opening sound so recall and everyday communication stay clear.
