Cavapoo Puppies: Temperament, Grooming, Health and What to Expect

A Cavapoo is a cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle, usually a Toy or Miniature Poodle. The mix can be appealing, but “designer dog” marketing often implies a predictability that mixed inheritance cannot guarantee.

Size can vary

A Cavapoo’s adult size depends heavily on the Poodle parent and the individual puppy’s inheritance. Ask the breeder for the actual size and weight of both parents rather than relying on labels such as “mini” or “toy Cavapoo,” which are not standardized breed categories.

Coat is not guaranteed

Puppies may inherit wavy, curlier or straighter coats, and shedding level can vary. No Cavapoo should be sold with a guarantee that it will be hypoallergenic.

Temperament

Both parent breeds are commonly selected for companionship and trainability, but an individual puppy can still be energetic, sensitive, vocal or cautious. Early socialization and reward-based training matter more than assuming the cross is automatically “easy.”

Grooming commitment

Many Cavapoos need regular brushing and professional grooming because longer mixed coats can mat close to the skin. Ears, eyes, nails and teeth also need routine care.

Health screening should cover both sides of the cross

The AKC lists cardiac, eye, hip and patella screening among Cavalier parent-club recommendations. Poodle recommendations vary by size and can include hips, patellas, eye exams and relevant DNA tests. A crossbreed breeder should not use “hybrid vigor” as a reason to skip health testing.

Ask for actual records

Exercise and enrichment

Young puppies need short play and learning opportunities, not forced endurance exercise. Sniffing, gentle training, food puzzles and plenty of sleep support development without trying to “wear the puppy out.”

Before adopting one

Mixed-breed rescues may label small Poodle-spaniel mixes as Cavapoos even when ancestry is uncertain. That can still be a good adoption match; simply evaluate the individual dog rather than treating the label as a genetic certificate.
