Punny Dog Names: Clever Wordplay, Pop Culture and Food Puns

By Smith SamPublished Updated

A punny dog name works when the joke is obvious enough to be fun but short enough to use at the vet, on a walk and during training. The cleverest written pun is not automatically the best everyday call name.

Playful dog for pun-inspired name ideas

Celebrity-style puns

Hairy Styles, Bark Ruffalo, Paw McCartney, Billie Howlish, Mutt Damon, Sarah Jessica Barker, Brad Pitbull, Woofie Goldberg

Food puns

Chew-bacca, Barkbecue, Pup Tart, Bark Choy, Waffle Woof, Nacho Pup, Doghnut, Macaruffi

Movie and TV puns

Indiana Bones, Sherlock Bones, Bark Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Pup Fiction, Dogtor Who, Paw Patroler, Furiosa

Literary puns

William Shakespaw, Jane Pawsten, Charles Barkens, Virginia Woof, F. Scott Fuzzgerald, Edgar Allan Paw

Shorter joke names

Beans, Pickle, Waffles, Noodle, Taco, Spud, Nugget, Bork, Socks, Goose, Toast, Miso

Keep the call name practical

The AKC’s naming guidance recommends names that are easy to say and distinct from common cues. “Sherlock Bones” can simply become Sherlock; “Sarah Jessica Barker” can become Sarah.

Do not build the joke around a harmful stereotype

A name can be funny without mocking disability, race, religion or a serious medical condition. Humor ages better when the joke is about language rather than a person or group.
