Jack Russell Terrier Guide: Energy, Prey Drive and Training

Jack Russell Terriers are small enough to fit under a chair and energetic enough to redesign your schedule. They were developed for fox work, so persistence, digging, chasing and quick reactions are normal parts of the breed’s heritage.

The main ownership question
Can you provide daily physical activity and structured mental work without expecting the dog to entertain itself? A bored terrier can become an efficient digger, barker or escape artist.
Recall deserves respect
Strong prey drive can make off-leash reliability difficult around wildlife. Build recall on a long line and do not test it beside roads or in areas where chasing could become dangerous.
Use the terrier brain
Scent games, trick training, controlled tug, earth-dog-style activities and puzzle feeding can be useful outlets. More running alone is not always the answer.
Other pets
Small mammals may trigger predatory behavior. Do not assume early exposure automatically makes every terrier safe with rabbits, hamsters or rodents.
Training style
Keep sessions clear and rewarding. Harsh corrections can add conflict without removing the underlying motivation to chase or investigate.
